Ramy Youssef Calls for a Free Palestine and a Trans President in ‘SNL’ Monologue

Later in the monologue, Youssef noted that he’s the only member of his friend group who prays, recalling that his friend Ahmed, whose family is in Gaza, recently requested prayers on their behalf. “[Ahmed] goes, ‘Ramy, [my family is] suffering,’” he recalled. “‘I don’t know where half of them are. Please, pray for them. It’s the only thing we can do.’”

Youssef went on to recite his subsequent prayer to SNL’s audience.

“I’m like, ‘God, please, please help Ahmed’s family,’” he said. “‘Please stop the suffering. Stop the violence. Please, free the people of Palestine, please, please.’”

As the audience applauded, he added: “‘And please free the hostages — all the hostages — please.’”

Youssef has been a particularly vocal advocate for Palestinians in recent months. In late 2023, he announced that all the proceeds from the remainder of his standup tour for More Feelings would go to American Near East Refugee Aid, a charity providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians amid Israel’s siege on Gaza. He also participated in a January benefit concert raising money to support relief efforts in Gaza and Sudan, and was one of several celebrities who wore “Artists for Ceasefire” pins to this year’s Oscars ceremony.

“We’re calling for an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We’re calling for peace and lasting justice for the people of Palestine,” Youssef told Variety on the Oscars red carpet, adding, “A lot of people are going to be wearing these pins tonight. There’s a lot of talking heads on the news. This is a space of talking hearts. We’re trying to have this big beam of humanity.”
