Kehlani Wants to Soothe You to Sleep With an Album of R&B Lullabies

Forget your plain old white noise machine. How’d you like lesbian singer-songwriter Kehlani to sing you to sleep?

Thanks to the musician’s latest project, that dream is about to become a reality. On Monday, news broke that Kehlani and fellow R&B star Jhené Aiko are teaming up to create a new album for Aiko’s Sleep Soul, a project that combines white, pink, and brown noise soundscapes with R&B melodies to create one-of-a-kind baby lullabies.

“Our goal is to create more variety and diversity in the baby sleep music space,” the official website reads. “We aim to help the next generation of parents find the best and most effective methods for putting and keeping their babies to sleep.”

This isn’t the first time that the duo have joined forces. Aiko was previously featured on Kehlani’s 2020 track “Change Your Life.”

And given that Kehlani is a Grammy-nominated R&B performer and a parent, their work with Sleep Soul is a natural fit. Over the years, the “Nights Like This” singer has been open about raising her daughter in an openly queer environment.

“All my friends, all her aunties, uncles, her godparents, everybody is just loudly queer,” she told the Advocate in 2021. “Our generation already kind of broke the mold of getting to that point, so I don’t even think our kids are going to think about it as something that they have to identify and differentiate. I feel like it should be normal.”

Whether you’re a queer parent or simply looking for new music to help you get some beauty sleep, you can check Sleep Soul Volume 4 when it comes out on Thursday, February 22.
